Filling In the Family Tree
.
Family genealogy work is a great way to introduce children to history discovery. We recommend starting out with some preliminary tree work together, then point the kids in the right direction so they can discover on their own what life was like back in the day of an ancestor.
You may have to give them some hints, but once they find something they think is interesting, nurture that interest to the fullest!
For example, depending on how far back you go you might come across old family pictures that show tools in use. It could prove fun for young boys, especially, to take them to a junk dealer to see if, together, you can find similar old tools for cheap.
But watch out! You could very well spark a life-long hobby! (There are books out there on how to restore old tools – just beware as cleaning some old relics can actually decrease their value.)
Another idea is to come up with a family-based living history activity to do together. Maybe an ancestor was known for lacework? Or maybe for growing prize-winning roses? Or… well, you get the idea!
